Tungsten Carbide

Tungsten carbide (hard alloy) possesses a series of excellent properties, including high hardness, wear resistance, good strength and toughness, heat resistance, and corrosion resistance. Its high hardness and wear resistance are particularly noteworthy, remaining largely unchanged even at 500ºC and maintaining high hardness at 1000ºC.

Tungsten carbide, also known as hard alloy, refers to a sintered composite material containing at least one metal carbide. Tungsten carbide, cobalt carbide, niobium carbide, titanium carbide, and tantalum carbide are common components of tungsten carbide. The grain size of the carbide component (or phase) is typically between 0.2 and 10 micrometers, and the carbide grains are bonded together using a metallic binder. The binder is usually cobalt (Co), but for some special applications, nickel (Ni), iron (Fe), or other metals and alloys can also be used. A specific combination of carbide and binder phases is called a "grade".

Tungsten carbide is classified according to ISO standards. This classification is based on the material type of the workpiece (e.g., P, M, K, N, S, H grades). The binder phase is mainly used for its strength and corrosion resistance.

The matrix of tungsten carbide consists of two parts: a hardening phase and a binder metal. The binder metal is generally an iron group metal, commonly cobalt or nickel. This results in tungsten-cobalt alloys, tungsten-nickel alloys, and tungsten-titanium-cobalt alloys.

Tungsten-containing steels, such as high-speed steel and certain hot-work die steels, show a significant improvement in hardness and heat resistance due to the tungsten content, but a sharp decrease in toughness.

The main application of tungsten resources is in cemented carbide, also known as tungsten carbide. Cemented carbide is considered the teeth of modern industry, and tungsten carbide products are widely used.
